If you’re into making your own beer, you simply have to take a look at the Philip G. Lee’s application for Windows Brewtarget. Praised by the media, this application has a lot to offer: it comes with a built in list of beer recipes, helps you create your own recipe, it provides support for multiple languages, access to the functions and features is done via a user friendly interface, and last but not least, access to the functionality is granted for free (the application is free and open source; donations are welcome).

Brewtarget is available for multiple platforms, mainly Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS, and for the open-source operating system Linux (32 as well as 64-bit editions). To get the application up and running on a Windows-powered PC, you will have to go through a standard setup procedure: download an executable, run it, follow the setup wizard’s onscreen instructions.

The interface is divided into several panels. The one to the left presents a list of beer recipes, info on equipment, fermentables, hops, and so on. The one in the upper and lower right hand corner presents more info on a selected recipe. Above these panels there’s a traditional File Menu and a bar with buttons for adding a new recipe, for accessing the equipment editor, fermentable database, yeast database, timers, and more. Overall, the interface is easy to navigate and you won’t have to go through a steep learning curve to get accustomed to using Brewtarget.

Brewtarget has powerful brewing functionality to offer. Just to put things in perspective, here’s a quick look at the application’s main features: built-in list of recipes, equipment/mashes/styles editor, fermentable/hop/misc/yeast database, timers, pitch rate calculator, refractometer tools, priming calculator, easily add new recipes, the application automatically calculates color, bitterness, and other parameters, export and import recipes, support for multiple languages.

Released under a GNU General Public License, Brewtarget is a free and open source application. Cons:
None that I could think of.

Pros

Brewtarget provides support for multiple platforms and for multiple languages. You will not have a hard time getting accustomed to the interface. The application’s powerful functionality is easy to access; it is provided for free (consider making a donation).

Cons

ider making a donation if you enjoy using the application. The money will go towards supporting its development. Go get Brewtarget. You will find this application’s brewing functionality to be incredibly useful.
